Apple Iphone, everywhere but Puerto Rico - 7.11.2007.1

Yesterday I received some interesting news. There has been a ton of news on the Iphone, the media has covered the lines awaiting its sale and people breaking them open. The lack of service, the cost to use the Iphone. Yes there has been a huge amount of news about Apple’s new little device.

One thing that seems to have slipped by the news media is that if you live in Puerto Rico, you can’t buy one. Yes, in Puerto Rico you cannot buy an Iphone. When I was told this I was surprised. I had to check it out for myself.
Picture found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico

I spent quite a bit of time on this. Cingular verified that the frequency the Iphone uses is the same as mainland America. Though the rates would probably be roaming for many, but Cingular does cover PR. The international department for AT&T verified that several people have used Iphones in Puerto Rico. At that point I was questioning if my source was correct.

Then I spoke with Apple. While I could not get a comment, I did verify that it is not possible to buy the Iphone in P.R., and I have been told it will not be shipped there. I would like to say this was completely confirmed, but as of this post I still have not heard back from the public relations department of Apple.

So why is this not available? From what I have been told from sources outside of Apple, Puerto Rico is not recognized as part of the United States by Apple. This does not affect the other products that Apple sells in Puerto Rico, just the Iphone. For some reason the area codes for Puerto Rico, 787 and 939, will not be accepted by the product. The Cingular service is seamless with P.R. and mainland America

So the team developing the Iphone either ignored Puerto Rico, don’t recognize it as part of America, or didn’t want to include it. None of these answers is a positive thing. If the people responsible for the Iphone ignored, either through innocence or need for deadlines, the existence of Puerto Ricans I’m upset. 4 million citizens of America deserve to be remembered. At the very least Apple has excluded a target market. Moreso I think they have insulted millions of Americans who work, live and die for America the same as any other individual in Michigan, or Ohio, or New York.

If those at Apple that are responsible don’t recognize P.R. as part of America, then I would have to think they are some of the brightest dumb people I have heard of. This is basic geography. It’s basic American history. It’s so prevalent and obvious a fact as to be taken for granted, which millions in the nation do every day.

Perhaps most troubling is if they didn’t want to include the commonwealth of America, the leading economy of the Caribbean, citizens by birth entitled to all rights the same as any other American. I don’t understand the reasoning. The GDP of Puerto Rico is $74 billion, there have been Puerto Ricans fighting in virtually every war America has had, and still do today. Is there some reason why I as a former Marine, a United States citizen, a productive businessman and positively contributing member of this society cannot buy their Iphone product in P.R.?

I don’t think that when my father volunteered for Viet Nam, where he was injured and lived the rest of his life afflicted with Agent Orange and other issues, he wanted to allow a company to imply that he was meaningless or worthless. Such is the implication I draw from the exclusion Apple has made.

Perhaps I am overreacting. I imagine that this is not what most in Apple believe. But considering I have yet to hear a response from the company, and I have heard that this is what is going on, and confirmed that the only cause would be from actions by Apple, well I’m left to think that some must have that thought.

Of all the freedoms that I and my family have at different times joined the military for, this is not one of them. I really would love to hear Apple’s response on this.

This is what I think, what do you think?

I am really surprised that almost after a year no residents have found and left comments on your excellent post.

Today is June 14, 2008. A bit more than 11 months after the first release. Almost after after local AT&T removed their iPhone poster, never to be seen again.

We have just received the second and greatest insult as Apple product consumers. Almost the entire world will be able to buy an iPhone locally. 70+ countries but the US territory of Puerto Rico. Just watch the 2008 keynote and you will see how our Commonwealth was ignored as either part of the US or as a region/country.

People here are hysterical and offended. Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's president now knows when he will be able to buy an iPhone locally. 4,000,000 US citizens residing in Puerto Rico are left with a corporate silence.

It is both ironic and probable cause that we have, not just one, but to iPhone carriers: AT&T and America Mobile (owners of local subsidiary Claro). Why not settle and have both deliver it? Why not deciding for AT&T? Or Claro? Why not remove Puerto Rico from Apple's Latin America region and locate it where it belongs? The U.S.A.

True or not, legally sound or not, people here are feeling discriminated. The company should get its act together, resolve and fix this problem.

I am an AT&T customer. I have a national plan. All iPhone features are locally supported. Almost 50% of the island surface is covered by 3G service where 90% of the people live.

We have had presidential candidates offer us the coveted presidential vote (we are still a territory and not a state) that would probably require a constitutional amendment or a complex law interpretation but no one has been able to let us buy a phone locally. Do you feel our pain?

It's been a year since your first post, or nearly a year. And whereas Apple's worldwide distribution of the iPhone has spread across the planet to include over 70 countries, our beloved Puerto Rico is STILL excluded. The only conclusion I can come to is that Apple doesn't believe Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. and they do not believe we are part of the international community either. If GoogleEarth were AppleEarth, Puerto Rico would be a blackhole in the Caribbean Sea.

It's been a year since the first iPhone came out... and it's been a year since we've tried to get the iPhone in Puerto Rico! We have a group here that goes by the name iWant that jave been trying to get the iPhone and an Apple Store to come to Puerto Rico! They got a petition and it's got about 1,500 people to sign! It's hard to find... so there are not THAT many signatures! I am sad to say that it's not just Apple that apparently left us in the blank... but like you said... we fight for America like any other American in the continental US... so then... why can't they let us vote for president? It's actually very sad to feel unwanted. It's not that much of a feeling... but it's still pretty bad! Although... right now... I would understand why Apple wouldn't come to Puerto Rico... considering our economy is not at it's best because of the governor we have! (Anibal Acevedo Vila) Which also ruins our image between Americans and American companies (like Apple). The minority of people want freedom too... but those are the voices that are most heard! So again... America notices THEM and NOT the majority of people who believe in statehood for Puerto Rico! You see... it's not as simple as you may think... they might just be thinking about a future for the company in Puerto Rico and they don't see much light at the end of this 7,000 mile tunnel! Although... they could have at least sold the iPhone through AT&T, but AT&T could be seeing about the same thing with the iPhone! Thousands and thousands of people in PR have lost their jobs... and more jobs are to be lost because of the Governor's administration, so they might be thinking: "they are going to get a 2-year contract to get the iPhone then are going to stop paying and end up with another debt because they too lost their jobs!" So then... it's not Apple's fault 100%.... let's give them the benefit of the doubt and try to understand our situation and theirs as well!
